A Whole New Game- Chapter 3 -A Hunger Games Story
Chapter 3: The Bloodbath
The interviews, our scoring, training, and forming the alliance in the training center. It all seems like such a blur.
This is it. This is the day that innocent children will die because of me. Might as well do the job myself, before they do it for me. At least I will end it quickly, no suffering. Just a quick flick of the wrist, that's all it takes. A stab through the heart is much faster than infection, or bleeding to death.
I think of my allies. Cato and Marvel, Glimmer and the girl from 4, all ready for the slaughter. They kill because they have to; I will kill to put them out of their misery, and to put me out of mine. The misery of knowing that 23 deaths will all be on my hand, a destiny I cannot control.
I hear the coundown begin, and climb into the glass tube, preparing myself for the oncoming slaughter.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath as the glass doors seal around me. This is it; ther

Chapter 1: The Reaping
"Athena? Can you watch Samantha tonight? Your father and I are going out for a bit."
"Yeah, sure mom." I reply.
I don't know where exactly they go, I only pray that they are safe. My parents are part of a secret organization who's goal is to overthrow the Capitol. What my parents do is dangerous and we have to be careful, everyone is a potential predator, everywhere could potentially be the last place they ever see.
I sigh as I turn toward my little sister in her cradle. Only two months old, and still I would do anything for her. She sighs in her sleep.
Something about her gives me chills. The way something can be so small and fragile, but still so alive, so young and full of life...it's baffling.
I peer out the window, I see my parents get out of the car. Something is very wrong. I see a Peacekeeper come out of the backseat, holding a gun to their heads. I freeze, stuck, as if the entire universe put on pause. They are arguing. I know I should mo

Chapter 4: Lover Boy and Fire Girl
I walk bitterly behind Glimmer, as we venture even deeper into the vast forest. I clench my fists as she walks past me to join Cato up at the front of our little herd. They whisper quietly for a moment, and flips her hairs once again before giggling with delight.
"Would you shut up ?" I snap.
Glimmer turns her head dramatically, flipping her hair again. She looks at me with a mock pout plastered on her stupid face.
"What's wrong, Emerald?" She says sarcastically in her awful high-pitched voice.
"It's Eleanor. My parents preferred not to give their child and unreasonable and idiotic name. Sorry I can't say the same for you."
Before I can continue, a silhouette strides forward from the trees. I instinctively put my hand on my sheath, but as the anomaly strides into the light, I chuckle. It's the pathetic boy tribute from District 12.
"Wait," he says noticing our hands on our weapons, "I want to help."
Of course you do. Glim

Chapter 2: Training
I wonder if Sammy's okay. They better be taking good care of her.
It has been almost a week since I have seen my beautiful baby sister. The train ride to the Capitol, the opening ceremonies, the preparations, it all seems like a blur. She is the only thing to me, the only thing I think of as I enter the training facility for our first day of real preparation.
I have never been in a place with so many deadly objects. Any number of the things in here could draw blood with a single touch. I hate to imagine how fast they can sever entire limbs, or heads for that matter.
Not many of the other tributes have arrived yet, the kids from Districts 1, 2, 7, and 11. The rest must still be on their way.
I previously decided that my tactics for the Games would mainly involve hiding, avoiding the other tributes until absolutely necessary. In order to do this, I have to keep my distance from them and brace myself for any kind of condition or s

Chapter 6: Tracker Jackers
I jolt awake and whip my head around. I count all of our allies, making sure no one is about to try to sneak attack me. Lover Boy sleeps on, leaning against a nearby tree. Clove lays next to Marvel, curled into his arms, and Cato sits a ways away, his snores rattling the forest. Even Glimmer rests, motionless in her place by our extinguished fire.
Must have been my imagination.
Then, the sound of unmistakable buzzing fills my ears. Tracker jackers. I let out a bloodcurdling scream as hundreds of the golden monsters stab my body. My allies are up within seconds, the thousands of tiny insects moving toward them as they awaken and run.
Clove, Marvel, and Lover Boy flee off in the direction of the lake, shrieking as they are attacked by the swarm. Glimmer begins to scream as the main cloud of creatures surrounds her, a second one entangling me in a haze of gold. I fall to the ground, convulsing as every inch of my b

Chapter 5: Sparks
I lay on the firm ground and stare up at the twinkling stars. Just think Eleanor, by this time tomorrow we will have killed 12, and without her we won't be needing Lover Boy anymore, so we can kill him too. Tomorrow is going to be a fun day. But until then you should get your beauty rest. Not that you need it.
I shift uncomfortably on the hard ground. I glance over to see Marvel, Glimmer, Clove, and Lover Boy, all sleeping comfortably. I groan as yet another rock manages to prod me in the back.
"Can't sleep?" asks Cato, who had taken first watch.
"No," I reply, "I guess I'm just not used to it yet."
"Yeah," he replies blankly.
We sit in silence for a few minutes. I sit and stare at the fire, my eyes following the waves of radiation and heat. Cato sticks the end of his sword in the fire, making it red hot, before extinguishing it in the dirt with a wsss sound. After a few minutes of this, he speaks up.
"What's it like back in Four?" he

Chapter 9: Splitting and Stealing
As I turn the corner and enter a small clearing, and clench my fists in envy at the scene I come upon. I watch as Clove clings onto Cato. He spins her, and the sound her cacophonous laughter fills the air. Oh what a happy little reuninon. Don't get too excited Clove, Cato's mine now. Finally, he sets her down, her sickening giggles stabbing my ears.
"Were your other two boyfriends just not enough for you?" I snap rudely, "You sure got over them fast. What a pity, Marvel looked rather cozy snuggled up with you yesterday morning." I can see Marvel out of the corner of my eye, his cheeks bursting with red hot clouds of embarrassment.
I smirk as she whips her head around to the sound of my voice, her gray-blue eyes bubbling like pools of hatred. Then she sees me, my nose bruised and broken, and a hideous grin slides on to her face.
"Oh Eleanor, I love what you've had done. Its so decorous! The blood really giv

Chapter 10: Changing Times
I ball my fists, my anger bubbling as I recall what happened. Not that I really enjoyed our little alliance. I only joined figuring they would get rid of the real competition, Iike Fire Girl and the boy from 11, and that after they were done for I could slit my allies throats in the night. Well, maybe not all of them, I think as I glance up at Cato walking ahead of me.
The sunlight coming through the leaves gives him an almost angelic look, his spiky hair gleaming with sweat. He hasn't said a word since our little clash with his friend, and I can tell it's eating him alive. Though I can't tell what's bothering him more, Marvel challenging him, or Clove abandoning him for Marvel. Why does he even care about her? Just let her die with that lanky idiot and little blond Romeo. What does he even see in her anyway? I stop myself, my daydreams ending abruptly. Listen to yourself, Eleanor. Worrying about who he likes in a match to the

Chapter 13: Monsters, Lies, and Allies
"I'm sorry, you're what?" Eleanor barks at me from across the table.
"I told you, I-"
"Oh I heard you. Snow's granddaughter. I'm just curious as to how on earth you expect us to believe your ridiculous lie."
"I'm not lying! I wouldn't lie, not about this," I say, my voice catching.
No one really reacts, all too shocked to do much more than stare. Every eye bores into me, and I sigh with relief when the silence is broken.
"How could you possibly have been reaped if you are his granddaughter?" questions Athena. "Everyone here knows how the Capitol manipulates everything to work the way they want it. Why would your grandfather, the ruler and controller of the Games, possibly put his own kin in them?"
"Just because I am family does not mean I am treated like it," I start. But he was going to save you. He was going to have you win. I take a deep breath and continue
A Bloody, Stupid Miracle The day we’d cured the human condition was the day I put a bullet through my head and didn’t die. It was also the day I realized how scared I actually was of death, and after hours of muscle ache from holding that gauze against my open skull, after the wound closed and everything went back to normal, I had myself a good old-fashioned brainstorm. How ironic.
But when summer came, everything had fallen to shit. The air scorched my skin and parched my tongue every time I took a breath. The sun glared down on a rapidly-collapsing world, full of the undying bastard children of cruelty and misfortune. What was one to do when their cells regenerated faster than they decomposed?
My feet hit the pavement, now littered with jagged bits of glass to snap at my toes, thoroughly baked by the blazing ball of bitter disdain high overhead. Today was worse than yesterday. Though I’d often wondered the purpose of it anymore, I
